GENERAL INFORMATION
The International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC), in collaboration with the City of Paris, Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), and other partners will host a fourth annual summit aimed at leveraging antiretrovirals to end AIDS-related mortality and prevent new HIV infections.
Controlling the HIV Epidemic with Antiretrovirals: Having the Courage of our Convictions will take place 1-2 October 2015 at the City Hall of the 4th Arrondissement of the City of Paris. The summit will serve as a forum for the presentation of data related to and discussion about the fast-tracked implementation of treatment as prevention (TasP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The summit will also allow clinicians, researchers, public health policy-makers, government officials, donor agency managers, civil society representatives, and other stakeholders to explore ways of generating demand for and increasing access to HIV testing, care, and treatment services globally.
PROGRAM
The summit will be co-chaired by Kenneth H. Mayer, MD (Harvard University/Fenway Institute, USA) and Julio SG Montaner, MD (British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, Canada).
In designing this year’s summit program, the Co-Chairs and Planning Committee chose the summit’s motto, “Having the Courage of Our Convictions,” acknowledged the near global consensus around the goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, as well as attaining global HIV testing, treatment, and viral suppression targets (90-90-90). However, they also shared a concern about the pace at which progress is being made to attain the goal and targets. Moreover, guiding the selection of this year's summit themes are the following sobering statistics:
- 4,600 babies are born HIV infected weekly
- 36,500 adults become HIV infected weekly, of whom 7,000 are young women
- 3,600 children and 25,000 adults die weekly of AIDS-related complications
